Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC)
A process whose purpose is to support business needs, consisting of Planning, Analysis, Design, and Implementation phases.
Planning Phase
The first phase of the SDLC that asks 'WHY?' and focuses on establishing business value and feasibility, yielding a System Request deliverable.
Analysis Phase
The second phase of the SDLC that asks 'WHAT?' by identifying requirements and creating analysis models, yielding a System Proposal deliverable.
Design Phase
The third phase of the SDLC that asks 'HOW?' by determining how the system will operate and creating design models, yielding a System Design deliverable.
Implementation Phase
The fourth phase of the SDLC during which the system is built.
System Request
The deliverable created at the conclusion of the Planning phase in the SDLC.
System Proposal
The deliverable created at the conclusion of the Analysis phase in the SDLC.
System Design
The deliverable created at the conclusion of the Design phase in the SDLC.
Systems Analyst
A role that bridges communication between business managers/system users and programmers/system administrators.
Project Manager
A role responsible for managing the trade-offs between Time, Cost, and Quality.
Rapid Application Development (RAD)
A system development methodology approach that includes phased development and prototyping.
Object-oriented Systems Analysis and Design (OOSAD)
A system development methodology distinct from traditional, RAD, and Agile approaches.
Agile Development
A system development methodology approach that encompasses Extreme Programming (XP) and Scrum.
Extreme Programming (XP)
A specific methodology categorized under Agile Development alongside Scrum.
