Flashcards covering key vocabulary, processes, and mechanisms of asexual reproduction and binary fission in bacteria.
Reproduction
The process by which living things produce offspring using various methods to ensure the continuity of species.
Asexual reproduction
A type of reproduction where an organism creates genetically identical offspring from a single parent without the fusion of sperm and egg.
Binary fission
A method of asexual reproduction used by bacteria in which a single parent cell replicates its genetic material and divides into 2 identical daughter cells.
Steps of binary fission
The four-step process consisting of: step 1 parent cell, step 2 replication of DNA, step 3 segregation of DNA, and step 4 cells splitting into two.
Reason bacterial binary fission is not mitosis
Bacteria are prokaryotes that lack a true nucleus and multiple linear chromosomes.
