Augustine’s starting point

God is perfect + God created the world = God made a perfect world.

god originally created a world without moral evil or natural evil .

evil is not a thing in itself - but the absence of good.

story of Adam and eve

God gave humans free will

but when they choose to disobey god they created an absence of good within themselves

the sin of Adam and Eve destroyed the state of perfection - the doctrine of the fall of man

God as father

God is a loving father who is both loving and fair.

god shows his justice by not intervening to prevent evil.

all evil is either sin or the punishment for sin

loving - through the death of Jesus anyone can repent and eternal life is available.

weaknesses

  • how could a perfect world could go wrong. logical contradiction. either the world wasn’t perfect or go d enabled it to go wrong.

  • how could perfect beings choose to do wrong - if goodness was hard-wired into our nature why would we choose evil.

  • is it real to say suffering isn’t real - Augustine playing word games by calling evil a ‘privation’? this idea wouldnt help us comfort a grieving parent.
