Diffusion
The spreading out of particles resulting in a net movement from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration.
Net
Overall.
Oxygen
A molecule needed by cells for respiration in mitochondria that diffuses into cells from a higher concentration in the bloodstream.
Carbon dioxide
A waste gas produced by respiration inside cells that diffuses out of the cell into an area of lower concentration.
Urea
A waste product produced inside cells that diffuses out of cells into the blood plasma and is excreted by the kidneys.
Concentration gradient
The difference in concentration between two areas; the greater the concentration gradient, the faster diffusion takes place.
Temperature
A factor affecting diffusion where a higher temperature increases the rate of diffusion because particles have more kinetic energy and move faster.
Surface area of the membrane
A factor affecting diffusion where a larger surface area of the cell membrane results in a greater rate of diffusion.
