What is Cellular Respiration?
the process of breaking the chemical bonds in glucose to release energy, which is used to convert ADP + Pi into ATP, where the energy is stored for use by the cell
What is Aerobic Respiration? (+ location)
using oxygen to break down glucose to produce ATP molecules, releasing CO2 and water as by-products. it occurs in the mitochondria
What is Stage 1 Glycolysis (aerobic)?
the breakdown of 6C glucose into two pyruvate molecules 3C in the cytosol
Glycolysis equation
glucose + NAD + 2ADP&Pi - > pyruvate + NADH + 2ATP
What is Stage 2 Kreb Cycle (aerobic)?
the two pyruvate 3C molecules are transported to the matrix of the mitochondria where they undergo a reaction resulting in the formation of acetyl CoA (2C), which is oxidised, releasing CO2 as a by-product and producing ATP, FADH and NADH
Equation of the Kreb Cycle
2 pyruvate + NAD + FAD + 2 ADP & Pi - > carbon dioxide + NADH + FADH + 2 ATP
What is Stage 3 Electron Transport Chain (aerobic)?
NADH and FADH enter and donate electrons to a series of enzymes. as electrons are passed along, they lose energy. this energy is used to produce ATP and oxygen acts as the final electron acceptor, forming water. occurs in the cristae of the membrane
Equation of Electron Transport Chain
oxygen + 26/28 ADP & Pi + NADH + FADH - > water + 26/28 ATP + NAD + FAD
