oral cavity
where digestion system starts (in mouth) mastication through saliva breaking down food, starts process of chemical digestion

passageway for food down the throat. nasopharynx, oropharynx, laryngopharynx
esophagus
connects the pharynx to the stomach. is smooth muscle tissue, moves food to stomach by muscle contractions
2 sphincters
stomach
breaks down food through acid in gastric juice, deflates when food is present (ruga)
small intenstine
to absorb nutrients and digestion. longest portion of GI tract. duodenum has secretions. the most villi / circular folds, villi, microvilli (all for absorption)
intestinal glands
located in small intestine and have the Crypt of Lieberkuhn and Brunner’s glands (secrets intestinal and alkaline fluid to protect from acidity
large intestine
last portion of digestion tract. no circular folds or villi, less enzymes secreting cells, has bacteria that digest remaining materials. responsible for finishing absorption, vitamin K and takes feces from body
divided by 4 regions: cecum, colon, rectum, anus
