Artificial Respiration
Emergency ventilatory support indicated following life-threatening incidents including drowning, electrocution, or poisoning.
Chemical Burn Treatment
Emergency management requiring flooding the affected area with water for at least 15 minutes.
Adult Mouth-to-Mouth Ventilation Rate
Rescue breathing delivered to an adult at a rate of 12 breaths per minute.
Adult CPR Compression Depth
Depression of the sternum by 121 to 2 inches during adult cardiac compressions.
Adult CPR Compression Site
The specific hand placement area located on the lower half of the sternum.
Aspiration Prevention during Resuscitation
The protocol of turning the patient's body to the side, sweeping out the mouth, and resuming mouth-to-mouth ventilation if vomiting occurs.
Electrical Burn Initial Protocol
Getting assistance to shut down electrical power in the area before attending to a victim near live equipment or wiring.
Unconscious Patient Hydration Rule
A strict contraindication stating an unconscious person must never be given anything to drink.
Ocular Acid Exposure Treatment
Flushing the eye immediately with clean water when contaminated by battery acid.
Partial Airway Obstruction
A blockage causing coughing and wheezing, managed by allowing the victim to continue coughing to dislodge the obstruction on their own.
Severe Airway Obstruction
Complete blockage characterized by an inability to speak and turning blue, managed by performing the Heimlich maneuver.
Aspirin
The most useful over-the-counter drug to reduce mild fever.
Fractured Back Symptoms
Pain localized at the injury site accompanied by possible numbness or paralysis below the fracture.
Four Man Log Roll
An effective standardized method for transferring patients with spinal injuries onto a spine board.
Respiratory Arrest
Cessation of breathing characterized by blue skin coloration and lack of respiration.
Antiseptics
Agents applied to wounds principally to prevent infection.
Fishhook Removal Technique
Pushing the barb completely through the skin, cutting it off, and extracting the remaining shank.
Carotid Artery
The major artery in the neck used as the primary location to check for a pulse in an adult victim.
Suspension of Breathing
The highest priority life-threatening condition requiring immediate emergency care when managing multiple accident victims.
Comparative Body Examination
A systematic physical assessment technique comparing corresponding left versus right parts of the body.
Arterial Bleeding
Severe vascular hemorrhage characterized by bright red blood flowing in rhythmic spurts.
Airway Tube Insertion
An advanced airway management procedure that should only be attempted by a trained person.
Flushed Unconscious Victim Positioning
Positioning an unconscious patient with a flushed face flat with their head and shoulders slightly raised.
Spinal Injury Priority
The primary first aid objective of avoiding possible injury to the spinal cord through incorrect handling.
Pupil Assessment
A neurological evaluation used to determine whether or not the brain is functioning properly.
Compound Arm Fracture Management
Applying a bulky, sterile, pressure dressing to control bleeding, applying a temporary splint, and obtaining medical advice.
Unembedded Eye Foreign Body Removal
Removing a loose foreign particle from the eye using a moist, cotton-tipped applicator.
Ammonia Inhalant
The proper chemical stimulant utilized to revive an unconscious person.
Concussion Care
Treatment for a conscious head injury patient without spinal complications, including elevating the head and shoulders slightly with a pillow.
