what is homeostasis?

homeostasis is the body’s way of trying to maintain a constant enviornment

2
New cards

what is the set point?

the ideal normal value

eg. body temp is 37 degree c

3
New cards

what is normal range?

normal range is the normal fluctuations around the set point that are still safe :)

4
New cards

what is the role of organs in homeostasis?

the nervous system and endocrine system play a large part - they gather information from external environment and internal environments

5
New cards

what are the 3 components of feedback systems?

  1. receptor

  2. control center

  3. effector

6
New cards

what does the receptor do in feedback system?

monitors the values of variables

7
New cards

what does the control centre do in feedback systems?

they establish the set points

8
New cards

what does the effector do in feedback systems?

they can change the value of the variable

9
New cards

what is the stimulus in terms of feedback systems?

the stimulus is what causes deviation from the set point - which is detected by the receptor

10
New cards

what is the response in terms of feedback systems?

the response is produced by the effector - in hopes to bring you back to homeostasis

11
New cards

what are the two types of feedback systems?

positive and negative

12
New cards

what is a positive feedback system?

positive feedback systems is when a deviation occyrs and the response it to make the deviation greater further away from the set point)

13
New cards

what can positive feedback systems lead to?

death or disease

14
New cards

whats a negative feedback system?

a negative feedback system is when there a deviation from the set point and its resisted (made smaller)

15
New cards

what are the steps of a negative feedback system?

  1. stimulus - disruption in homeostasis

  2. controlled condition

  3. receptors - inputs that signal to the control center

  4. control center - outputs the signal to the effector

  5. effector - makes a response

  6. response

  7. return to homeostasis

when working out is blood pressure consistured homeosatsic?

Is it homeostatic!! This is because during exercise the body has increased metabolic demands causing an increase in regular variables to meet the demands of exercise - completely normal because it will go back to our normal set point
