Oxidation
The loss of electrons by a species, resulting in an increase in its oxidation number.
Reduction
The gain of electrons by a species, resulting in a decrease in its oxidation number.
Oxidizing Agent
The substance that accepts electrons during a reduction reaction and undergoes a decrease in oxidation number.
Reducing Agent
The substance that donates electrons during a reduction reaction and undergoes an increase in oxidation number.
Oxidation Number (O.N)
A number that represents the total number of electrons that an atom either gains or loses in a chemical reaction.
Redox Reaction
A chemical reaction that involves the transfer of electrons between two species.
Combination Reaction
A type of redox reaction where two or more substances combine to form a single product.
Decomposition Reaction
A type of redox reaction where a single compound breaks down into two or more simpler substances.
Single Replacement Reaction
A type of redox reaction in which one element replaces another element in a compound.
Combustion Reaction
A type of redox reaction that typically involves a substance reacting with oxygen to produce energy (heat and light).
