Safety glasses
Must be worn at all times in the shop and adhere to ANSI Z87.1+ standards.
Clothing restrictions
No long sleeves, gloves, open toe shoes, jewelry, or watches allowed in the lab.
Long hair
Must be secured behind the head to prevent accidents.
Machine familiarity
Become thoroughly familiar with the machine before operating it.
Asking for help
Always consult a supervisor or shop manager when in doubt.
Operating equipment
Never use equipment when tired or rushed for time.
Approved work
Only attempt tasks that you have been approved to do and are comfortable with.
Additional training
Seek additional training and refresher courses as necessary.
Rotating components
Never reach over, around, or near rotating cutter(s) or chucks.
Stopping machines
Stop the machine when the cutter is not cutting or when changing tools/parts.
Chip removal
Use gentle air blasts or chip brushes to remove chips, being cautious of sharp edges.
Chip shield
Use a chip shield to protect yourself and others from flying chips.
Work area cleanliness
Keep all rags and tools away from the machine during use.
Clamping
Ensure that the holding device and work-piece are securely clamped.
Cutting tool maintenance
Check that the cutting tool is sharp, at the correct height, and has proper clearance.
Distraction avoidance
Do not talk to others or be distracted while operating the machine.
Machine supervision
Do not walk away from running machines; turn them off when not in use.
Reporting issues
Report all broken tools and malfunctioning equipment to a supervisor.
Clean work area
Keep your work area clean and free of chips and oils.
Work station condition
Return the work station to pre-work condition before leaving.
Machine cleanliness
Leave the machine cleaner than you found it.
Student teaching restrictions
Students are not allowed to teach other students how to use the machine.
Machine operation approval
Do not operate a machine that appears to be in use without approval.
Safety awareness
Be safe, use common sense, and look out for the safety of others.
