Describe the hair structure
medulla - made out of a soft, oily substance
cortex - thickest layer
cuticle - thin protective layer that contains the nourishing portion essential to hair growth
What can affect the hair?
heat/chemicals affect the cuticle
bleaching affects both cuticle and cortex
What type of hair has a medulla?
course hair has a medulla; fine/straight hair does not.
how do curls keep you cool?
tightly curled hair offers greater protection from solar radiation heat
What does wetting hair do to the cuticle?
Wetting hair/using shampoo sightly raises the cuticle.
Which gland is associated with hair follicles?
Apocrine glands, contain proteins and lipids

explain the different types of burns
1st degree burns: 1 layer of skin are affected (epidermis)
2nd degree burns: 2 layers of skin are affected (epidermis and dermis)
3rd degree burns: 3 layers of skin are affected (epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis)
describe eccrine glands
these glands are all over the body and produce sweat. they help with thermoregulation.

What is a sebaceous gland?
It excretes sebum, an oily substance that lubricates and protects skin/hair

describe what the body does when it gets hot:
Sweat glands become active and the sweat evaporates to make heat escape from the body. muscle hairs are relaxed and blood vessels are dilated.

describe what the body does when it gets cold:
sweating is reduced, the hair shafts stand up due to the arrector pilli to make a barrier between the cold and the skin
Blood vessels constrict.

Describes what happens to blood vessels when hot/cold
Hot = vasodilation
widening of blood vessels
promotes heat exchange
Cold = vasoconstriction
constriction of blood vessels
reduces heat exchange
what is frostbite?
when the skin and its underlying tissues freeze. caused by prolonged exposure to cold temps
explain what Vaso-change is?
regulating body temperature through behavior
What are the 4 kinds of sensory and what do they sense?
Thermoreceptor - senses heat/cold
Nociceptor - senses pain
tactile corpuscle - senses touch
lamellated corpuscle - senses pressure/vibration

what are rickets?
Results from a lack of calcium, misshaping bones
what does the body do when the skin gets cut?
Fibroblasts deposit collagen to form a bridge so that the epidermis can grow
