Normal force
When two objects compress into each other. A normal force is perpendicular to the surface
Friction force
When two surfaces slide or shear along each other.
Traction force
The friction force that allows us to step forward or keeps car wheels from spinning
Push force or pull force
A combination of both compression and shear forces are present when we touch things.
Tension forces
Stretching forces within strings or chains
Thrust force
A propelling force when an object interacts with a fluid, like water or air
Drag
A resistive force when an object interacts with a fluid, like water or air
Buoyant force
Floating force when an object interacts with a fluid, like water or air
Lift force
Steering (or Bernoulli’s) forces when an object interacts with a fluid, like water or air
Non-contact forces
When two objects interact without touching, they exert forces through a force field. Some non-contact force examples are gravitational forces, electric forces and magnetic forces.
