Heritable Genetic Code
Instructions that have to be past down from generation
Reproduction
Creating new organisms like themselves
Growth and Development
Increase in size and increase in complexcity
Responsive to the environment
Take in information, and react accordingly
Made of 1 or more cells
Cell-basic unit of life (simple living thing)
Homeostasis
(living organisms contain) keeping some characteristics constant
Uses energy
all require energy just to stay alive
Evolution over generations
Evolution is change
Biosphere
On the top, all of the life on earth and all of the places its been
Ecosystem
All living and non living things in a defined area
Community
All living things in a spot
Population
All the organisms in a single species that are living in a defined area (human, tree, bacteria, ant)
Organisms
Individually living things (is the cell)
Organ
(lungs and heart)
Tissue
Cells that work together
Cell
Basic unit of all living things
Molecule
Group of atoms that are held together by chemical bonds
Atom
The smallest part of a substance that still has all the properties of the substance
What are the 3 domains
Bacteria, Archea and Eukarya
What are the 4 kingdoms
Plants, animals, fungi and protists
Prokaryotic
Bactieria and more simple cell
Eukaryotic
all the 4 kingdoms and more complex with a nucleus
What do both pro and eua cells have
Cell membrane, ribosomes, DNA, cytoplasm, and flagellum
What is the structure and composition of the cellular membrane
A dynamic fluid barrier that separates the inside of a cell from its external environment
Active transport
Transport of a solute against its concentration gradient. (using energy)
What is the direction of active transport
From high solute to low solute and moves in the opposite direction than expected
What does active transport always require
Energy, and protien pump
What is the direction of diffusion and of osmosis
High to low (solute) also can cross the phospholipid bilayer
What is homeostasis
The maintenance of some parameter at a reflectively constant value. (human body temp) (blood sugar)
What is negative feedback
A system which change to the value of some preiemtier activates mechinisms that counter at the original change
Positive feedback
A system in which a change to the value in some preiemtier activates mechinisms that amplify the orginal change (microphone too close to its speaker)
