These flashcards cover key brain regions and structures, their functions, and significant components of the neural system.
Hindbrain
Part of the brain that includes the medulla, pons, and cerebellum; responsible for essential survival functions such as breathing and coordination.
Midbrain
Located atop the brainstem; connects hindbrain and forebrain, controlling motor movement and transmitting auditory and visual information.
Forebrain
Includes the cerebral cortex, thalamus, and hypothalamus; manages complex cognitive activities and sensory functions.
Brainstem
Central core of the brain responsible for automatic survival functions; consists of the medulla and pons.
Medulla
Base of the brainstem that controls heartbeat and breathing.
Pons
Part of the brainstem that coordinates movement and controls sleep.
Thalamus
Forebrain's sensory control center, directing messages to sensory receiving areas in the cortex.
Reticular Formation
A nerve network filtering information and controlling arousal, located through the brainstem into the thalamus.
Cerebellum
The 'little brain' at the rear of the brainstem responsible for processing sensory input and coordinating movement.
Limbic System
Neural system in the forebrain that controls emotions and drives; includes amygdala, hypothalamus, and hippocampus.
Amygdala
Two lima-bean sized neural clusters in the limbic system linked to emotion, especially fear and aggression.
Hypothalamus
Limbic system structure regulating maintenance activities (eating, drinking) and emotions.
Hippocampus
Neural center in the limbic system that processes explicit (conscious) memories.
Cerebral Cortex
Ultimate control and information processing center of the brain, consisting of four lobes.
Frontal Lobes
Part of the cerebral cortex responsible for higher order thinking, language processing, and muscle movements.
Parietal Lobes
Structural portion of the cerebral cortex that receives sensory input for touch and body position.
Occipital Lobes
Cerebral cortex region at the back of the head that processes visual information.
Temporal Lobes
Cerebral cortex area involved in auditory processing and language.
Motor Cortex
Cerebral cortex area controlling voluntary movements, located at the rear of the frontal lobes.
Somatosensory Cortex
Area at the front of the parietal lobes registering and processing touch and movement sensations.
Association Areas
Cortex regions involved in higher mental functions, not directly related to primary motor/sensory functions.
