Skull
The skeletal structure of the head that supports the face and protects the brain from injuries, consisting of 22 bones subdivided into 8 cranial bones and 14 facial bones.
Backbone
The central support structure of the body, also known as the spine or vertebral column, which consists of 33 small bones called vertebrae.
Vertebra
The building unit of the vertebrae or backbone.
Sternum
The long, flat bone that forms the front part of the rib cage.
Forelimbs
The arms, which are attached to the backbone with the help of the shoulder girdle.
Hind Limbs
The legs, which are attached to the backbone with the help of the pelvic or hip girdle.
Femur
The single long bone in the upper part of the leg, also known as the thigh bone, which is the longest bone in the body.
Joint
A place where two bones meet.
Ligament
A band of strong tissues that connects the bones and joints.
Hinge Joint
A joint that allows movement of bones in only one direction, either forward or backward.
Ball and Socket Joint
A joint that allows movements in all directions, where one end of the bone is shaped like a ball and the other end is shaped like a cup.
Pivot Joint
A joint that allows the rotatory movement of bones, helping in the side-to-side rotation of the head.
Gliding Joint
A joint that allows bones to glide against each other in any direction, found in the wrist, ankle, and between vertebrae of the backbone.
Cartilage
A strong elastic tissue that protects bones from rubbing against each other at joints; soft to touch and easily bent, found in the ankle, elbow, knee, tip of the nose, and tip of the ears.
Muscles
Soft tissues that cover the bones.
Tendons
Strong tissues that attach muscles to the bones.
Skeletal Muscles
Muscles that connect to bones, also known as voluntary muscles because their movements can be directly controlled, and also known as strait head muscles.
Cardiac Muscles
Involuntary muscles found in the heart.
Smooth Muscles
Involuntary muscles found in the walls of organs and blood vessels within the body whose movements cannot be controlled.
Human Circulatory System
The system that helps in the transport and circulation of various substances to all parts of the body.
Heart
A muscular organ located in the chest cavity slightly towards the left that pumps blood throughout the body.
Atria
The two upper chambers of the heart.
Ventricles
The two lower chambers of the heart.
Blood
A red colored fluid that flows freely throughout the body, transferring oxygen and nutrients to the cells.
RBCs
Red colored cells in the blood that carry oxygen from the lungs to other parts of the body and help in removing carbon dioxide.
WBCs
Colorless cells in the blood that help to fight infections and protect the body against diseases.
Platelets
Cells that help in the clotting of blood in case of a cut or wound.
Blood Vessels
A fine network of tubes—including arteries, veins, and capillaries—that carry blood throughout the body.
Arteries
Blood vessels that carry oxygen-rich blood from the heart to other parts of the body.
Capillaries
Small networks of blood vessels divided from arteries that carry blood to every cell of the body.
Veins
Blood vessels that carry carbon dioxide rich blood from different body parts to the heart.
Circulation
The movement of blood through the heart and the body in a flowing manner.
