requires O2 to survive. growth @top of tube. goes from high O2 concentration to low O2 concentration

obligative anaerobe

can’t survive WITH O2. at the bottom of tube

facultative anaerobe

mostly at top of tube some at the bottom. prefer O2 but CAN survive without it. examples: Enterobacteriaceae, staphylococci

aerotolerant anaerobe

no preference for O2. ex: staphylococci. evenly distributed throughout tube.

microaerophile

requires less than atmospheric levels of O2. grows in middle of tube.

E. coli, clastridium sporagenes, pseduomonas aueroginosa, streptococcus pyogenes

MSA plate organisms

staphylococcus aureus, streptococcus epidermis, pseudomonas aeurigonsa

staph aureus on MSA

G (growth,) color: yellow, can tolerate salt and fermentate mannitol

streptococcus epidermis on MSA

G (growth), color: pink, can tolerate salt but CANT ferment mannitol

pseudomonas aeruginosa on MSA

N (no growth) color: N/A. can’t tolerate salt (7.5% NACI concentration)

MAC species

E. coli, pseudomonas aeruginosa, streptococcus pyogenes

E. coli on MAC

G( growth), color: pink, GRAM (-) and can ferment lactose (coliform)

pseudomonas aeruginosa on MAC

G (growth), color: yellowish media, can’t ferment lactose. non-coliform GRAM (-)

streptococcus pyogenes on MAC

N (no growth), color: N/A, GRAM (+) can’t grow with crystal violet and bio salts

Blood Agar species

agar appearance: clearing around growth, BETA hemolysis, can COMPLETELY BREAK DOWN RBCS

agar appearance: appears normal, GAMMA hemolysis, organism CANT break down RBCS

staphylococcus pneumoniae on blood agar

agar appearance: greenish tint appearance, ALPHA hemolysis, can PARTIALLY BREAK DOWN RBCS
