Phase Diagram
A graphical representation showing the phases present at different temperatures and compositions.
Eutectic Reaction
A reaction involving the transformation of a liquid into two solid phases at a specific composition and temperature.
Solidus Line
The line in a phase diagram above which a material is completely liquid.
Liquidus Line
The line in a phase diagram below which a material is completely solid.
Tie Line
A horizontal line in a phase diagram that connects the compositions of phases at equilibrium.
Gibbs Phase Rule
A rule that describes the relationship between the number of phases, components, and degrees of freedom in a system.
Hypoeutectoid Steel
Steel that contains less than the eutectoid composition of carbon, leading to a predominant phase of ferrite.
Hypereutectoid Steel
Steel that contains more than the eutectoid composition of carbon, which results in a predominant phase of cementite.
Pearlite
A microstructural feature consisting of alternating layers of ferrite and cementite.
Invariant Point
A point in a phase diagram where three phases coexist and is independent of temperature and composition.
Isomorphous System
A binary alloy system where complete solid solubility exists between the components.
Nucleation
The initial process of forming a new phase from a parent phase, which can be homogeneous or heterogeneous.
