From just war to just peace

The shift from just war reasoning to the just peace reasoning

War may follow inevetably from particukar conditions of injusice, but such conditions are contingent, not necessary

Personal, social, and international relationships can be arranged to avoid persisten injustices

This is why pacifism goes beyond a spectrum of anti-war  forms to embrace positive conceptions of peace

Peace is more than the absence of war.

Viewed positively, peace is a social order based on agreement arising from within groups through the cooperative participation of member.

This stands in contrast to social order imposed from the outside, by force.

Making positive peace involves identifying and building conditions that create and sustain cooperative internal order.

Much of this work goes on … within a conceptual framework that takes war for granted and thus distorts the concept of peace, narrowing it to concern for one’s own immediate nation, religion, culture and so on, often deying such peaceful concern to distant, different and ‘foreign’ others.

But when positive peace is built, … the circle of concern is widened by opposition to war and universal recognition of human rights

Negative peace vs positive peace

Negative peace is the absence of violence or conflict. It's when people are not fighting or actively harming one another. Positive peace, on the other hand, is more than just the absence of violence. It's a state of harmony and wellbeing

Positive peace includes things like respect, justice, and equality. It’s about more than just avoiding conflict; it’s about creating a peaceful environment where everyone can thrive.

Negative peace is the absence of violence or the absence of war. It is often thought of as the only type of peace, when there is no fighting or violence. The advantage of negative peace is that it can prevent violence and war.
