eel-like parasite which attaches to host, invasive, spawns in streams and migrates from lakes

Lake Sturgeon
large and long-lived, protected in many states, barbels on snout have taste buds. Habitat: Deep rivers and lakes, rocky substrates

Bowfin
piscivore, ancient traits (rounded caudal fin, gas bladder lung), large scales, rounded snout. Habitat: Lakes and rivers of Eastern North America

Longnose Gar
long slender snout, interlocking armored scales, lives in long rivers in slow moving water, feeds on small fish

American Eel
only freshwater eel in North America, complex, migratory lifestyle

Alewife
spread to Great Lakes through Welland Canal, zooplanktivore, important prey source for salmonids, "sawbelly". Habitat: saltwater fish that spawn in freshwater streams; also introduced into inland lakes and able to survive

Brook Trout
Coldwater streams, lakes, eats small fish and insects, squiggly patterns on upper body

Northern Pike
large stalking predator, duck-billed. Habitat: Shallow, weedy areas of lakes and rivers; large individuals live in deeper waters

Eastern Blacknose Dace
small minnow, tiny scales, common stream fish, riffles, feed on aquatic macroinvertebrates

Creek Chub
larger minnow, large scales, streams, blunt body shape, dorsal surface darker, feeds on invertebrates

White Sucker
wide range of habitats, migrate into streams to spawn, tolerant of pollution, generalist feeder

Brown Bullhead
dark brown mottled body with light underside, benthic feeder on mostly invertebrates, whiskers on chin. Habitat: lakes and ponds, prefers standing water

Burbot
mostly piscovorous, deep cold water, smooth skin, spawn in shallow water in late winter, long anal and dorsal fins

Smallmouth Bass
shallow, rocky, vegetated habitats, prefers flowing water, eats invertebrates

Round Goby
invasive from Eastern Europe, feeds on eggs of other fish and invasive mussels, so swim bladder (benthic). - Habitat: lakes

Slimy Sculpin
coldwater streams, deep lakes, gravel substrate, benthic, feeds on benthic invertebrates, eyes on top of head

Longnose Dace
Up to 4 in.Snout extends well beyond and overhangs mouth. Upper body is light olive-green to black, lower body silvery-white. Habitat: swift flowing streams with riffles and pools. Widely distributed

Cutlips Minnow
olive colored back, white belly; well defined lateral stripe. Lower jaw distinct, with middle lobe protuding ~5 in. Habitat: clean, freestone streams and rises in slow moving pools rather than riffles and fast water

Common shiner
Silver color with dusky back - fins can have pink or orange pigmentation on margins. Body is heaviest toward front. Head moderately large and blunt; eyes large; mouth large and forward pointing. most 2.5-4inches. Habitat: widely distributed in most habitats. In both warm and coldwater streams

Tessellated Darter
v-shaped dark marks along the sides and 12 to 14 rays in the second dorsal fin. 2 to 8 cm. Habitat: streams and lakes

Atlantic salmon
Similar to brown trout, but only have single
row of weak deciduous teeth. Back and sides are grayish
brown with large dark spots. 15-30 in, Habitat: Anadromous fish that live in both fresh and saltwater, spending most of their adult life at sea.

Freshwater drum
heavy bodied. Looks like carp but has 8-9
