Chemistry
The science that studies matter, its properties, its changes, and the way materials behave and interact.
Hypothesis
A testable proposed explanation or statement created during scientific work that can be investigated using evidence.
Beaker
A laboratory equipment item used for holding or mixing small quantities of substances.
Graduated cylinder
A laboratory instrument used specifically for measuring liquid volume.
Pipette
A laboratory tool used for transferring a measured small volume of liquid.
Thermometer
An instrument used for measuring temperature to determine the thermal condition of a substance or material.
Digital or analytical balance
An instrument used for measuring the mass of a sample.
Bunsen burner / electric hot plate
Laboratory equipment used for heating substances during experiments.
Stirring bar
A tool used in the laboratory context for mixing substances.
Universal indicator
A substance used for observing acid/base-related color changes in a solution.
Magnet
An instrument used for testing the magnetic behavior of materials.
Matter
The physical substance that makes up the objects and materials around us.
Solid
A state of matter where particles are close together and organized, vibrate in place, and maintain a definite shape and volume.
Liquid
A state of matter where particles are close but can move and slide past one another, keeping a definite volume while taking the shape of their container.
Gas
A state of matter where particles are far apart and move freely and rapidly, expanding to fill available space.
Corpuscular model of matter
A particle kinetic representation used to explain or predict phenomena by modeling matter as being made of particles.
Physical property
A characteristic that can be observed or measured without changing the chemical identity of the substance.
Chemical property
A characteristic describing how a substance may behave or change when undergoing a chemical interaction or transformation with another substance.
Extensive property
A property that changes when the amount of matter changes, such as mass and volume.
Intensive property
A property that does not depend on how much material is present, such as temperature, used to identify or compare materials.
Physical change
A process where the form, state, size, or appearance of matter changes while the substance itself remains the same material.
Chemical change
A transformation where original substances change to produce different substances or new chemical characteristics.
Stopwatch
An instrument used to measure the duration of a process or test.
