Vocabulary practice flashcards covering neuroplasticity, exercises, compensatory strategies, diet modifications, enteral feeding, and surgical interventions for the SLP 601 K&S #3 exam.
Knowledge & Skills Check-off #3 (K&S #3)
An SLP 601 assessment scheduled for Thursday, November 12, 2026, delivered as a 45-minute Brightspace Quiz with approximately 30–40 questions covering adult dysphagia treatment.
Principles of Neuroplasticity
Ten experience-dependent principles that guide treatment planning and physiological rehabilitation in dysphagia.
Strength Training vs. Skill Training
Two distinct treatment paradigms in dysphagia rehabilitation that differentiate building muscular force and endurance from refining neural coordination and motor control.
Rehabilitative Exercises
Swallowing interventions designed to permanently restore or improve underlying swallow physiology, distinguished from compensatory strategies (though some maneuvers serve both functions).
Compensatory Strategies
Techniques—such as postures, maneuvers, and bolus modifications—designed to immediately bypass or accommodate swallowing impairments and enhance safety without directly rehabilitating underlying physiology.
Shaker / Head-Lift Exercise
A rehabilitative swallowing exercise designed to target specific physiological impairments, such as upper esophageal sphincter opening and suprahyoid muscle activity, with documented clinical limitations.
Chin Tuck Against Resistance (CTAR)
A rehabilitative exercise targeting submental and suprahyoid musculature to address specific swallowing impairments.
Masako / Tongue-Hold
A rehabilitative exercise in which the tongue is held between the teeth during swallowing to target pharyngeal constriction and base-of-tongue retraction.
Effortful Swallow
A swallowing maneuver that can serve as both a rehabilitative exercise and a compensatory strategy, designed to increase tongue-base retraction and pharyngeal pressure generation.
Mendelsohn Maneuver
A swallowing maneuver used for both rehabilitation and compensation that prolongs laryngeal elevation and duration of upper esophageal sphincter opening.
Effortful Pitch Glide
A rehabilitative exercise aimed at recruiting pharyngeal constrictors and elevating the larynx via vocal pitch modulation.
EMST (Expiratory Muscle Strength Training)
A rehabilitative exercise using pressure threshold devices to strengthen expiratory and submental muscles for airway protection and swallow function.
Chin Tuck / Down Posture
A compensatory posture that repositions anterior pharyngeal structures and widens the valleculae to improve airway protection, though contraindicated in certain swallowing presentations.
Head Turn
A compensatory posture that rotates the head toward the damaged or weaker pharyngeal side to direct the bolus down the intact, stronger channel.
Head Tilt
A compensatory posture that tilts the head toward the stronger side, utilizing gravity to direct the oral or pharyngeal bolus along the unimpaired path.
Reclined / Head-Back Positioning
A compensatory posture utilizing gravity to assist oral bolus propulsion into the pharynx, requiring careful consideration of airway protection risks and contraindications.
Supraglottic Swallow
A compensatory maneuver involving a pre-swallow breath hold and an immediate post-swallow cough to achieve voluntary vocal fold closure and clear airway penetration.
Super-Supraglottic Swallow
A compensatory maneuver requiring an effortful breath hold (bearing down) followed by a swallow and cough to achieve tight false and true vocal fold closure before and during the swallow.
Double Swallow
A compensatory maneuver directing the patient to perform two swallows per single bolus to clear residual pharyngeal or oral material.
Diet and Bolus Modification
Compensatory/supportive management altering liquid viscosity and bolus volume to improve swallowing safety, which carries potential consequences for patient hydration, satisfaction, and adherence.
Nasogastric Tube (NG Tube)
A temporary enteral feeding tube inserted through the nose into the stomach, distinguished from longer-term percutaneous gastrostomy tubes.
Gastrostomy Tube (G-Tube)
A feeding tube placed surgically or endoscopically through the abdominal wall directly into the stomach for enteral nutrition.
CP Dilation, Botulinum Toxin, or Myotomy
Surgical and procedural interventions designed to remediate cricopharyngeal dysfunction and improve upper esophageal sphincter opening.
Vocal Fold Injection / Medialization Thyroplasty / Arytenoid Adduction
Surgical procedures indicated for glottic insufficiency or vocal fold immobility to restore vocal fold closure and airway protection during swallowing.
Aspiration-Prevention Surgeries
Surgical interventions such as laryngotracheal separation and functional laryngectomy that eliminate aspiration risk at the tradeoff of irreversible loss of normal voice or altered upper airway anatomy.
HRM / HRIM (High-Resolution Manometry / High-Resolution Impedance Manometry)
An instrumental diagnostic tool that provides dynamic pressure and impedance mapping of the pharynx and upper esophageal sphincter for surgical planning and postoperative rehabilitation.
