French and Indian War (1754)
A war beginning in 1754 that resulted in France losing almost all North American territory and created debt that led the British to enforce taxes in the colonies.
Proclamation of 1763
A British rule stating that settlers could not settle west of the Appalachian Mountains, designating that land for American Indians.
Stamp Tax Act 1765
An act that created a tax on different forms of paper documents, where a stamp served as proof the tax had been paid.
Lexington and Concord (1775)
The 1775 conflict marking the beginning of the American Revolution.
Quartering Act
A law stating that colonists had to allow British soldiers to live in their homes.
Boston Massacre
A 1770 event in which British soldiers shot and killed unarmed civilians.
1st Continental Congress
The first meeting in Philadelphia where 12 colonies sent representatives to discuss responding to the British Coercive Acts, which Georgia did not attend due to its dependence on the British.
Patriot
A supporter of the Revolution (also known as a Whig) who believed colonists were deprived of rights as British citizens and that taxation without representation was unfair.
Loyalist
A colonist (also known as a Tory) who supported remaining part of Great Britain, often consisting of wealthier merchants, farmers, or individuals born in England.
George Walton
A Georgia signer of the Declaration of Independence from Virginia who worked as a lawyer and was captured in Savannah before being released in a prisoner exchange.
Lyman Hall
A Georgia signer of the Declaration of Independence from Connecticut who worked as a doctor and had both of his homes in Savannah burned.
Button Gwinnett
A Georgia signer of the Declaration of Independence from England who was a merchant, served as president and commander-in-chief of Georgia, and died in a duel in 1777.
Preamble
The introduction to the Declaration of Independence, beginning with "When in the course of human events it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another…".
Grievances
The body of the Declaration of Independence stating complaints, such as taxation without representation and being forced to house British soldiers.
Declaration (Conclusion)
The concluding part of the Declaration of Independence where the colonists declare themselves the "United States of America".
Battle of Kettle Creek
A Feb 1779 Revolutionary War battle near Augusta led by Patriots Andrew Pickens, John Dooley, and Elijah Clarke that gained supplies and boosted morale.
Siege of Savannah
An Oct 1779 battle where British/Loyalists defeated the Patriots and held Savannah until the war ended, marked as one of the deadliest battles of the Revolution.
