What is ASHA

ASHA stands for the American Speech-Language Hearing Association. It is the professional association for speech pathologists, audiologists, speech, language, and hearing scientists, support personnel, and students. Their goal is to empower and support these individuals through advancing science, setting standards, fostering excellence in practice, and advocating for members and who they serve. They strive to make effective communication a human right that is accessible and achievable for all.

what are ASHA resources

ASHA provides a wide range of resources all of which are relevant to the fields of speech-language pathology and audiology. They provide access to certification management, ethics, practice management, upcoming events, resource tools, and even upcoming events. It is an easy access website that can be used to find broad definitions of a disorder or more in depth information such as codes of ethics.

evidence maps is an online tool on ASHA that is useful in finding the latest summarized evidence on screening, assessment, treatment, and service delivery for audiologists and SLPs

practice portal is an online tool that offers one stop access to resources to guide evidence based decision making on clinical and professional issues

ICD-10 codes are the official system that assign healthcare codes to descriptive factors such as diagnoses, procedures, diseases, health problems, signs and symptoms, causes of injury, etc.

A replacement behavior is an alternative behavior used to serve the same purpose. It functions as a way to help reach the same purpose in a quicker and easier manner than the challenging behavior (a substitute for a behavior that limits learning and inclusion)

what is the IEP

Individualized educational program which is developed for every student who receives special education services and is a legal document that must be followed as written. It includes present level of performance, measurable goals, how progress is measured, modification and accommodations, and any transition planning. It is an outlined document that gives detailed information about the services being provided to the student (it lays out special ed instruction, supports, and services that a student needs to strive in school)

what is PLAAFP

present levels of academic achievement and functional performance, is a statement that goes in the IEP. It is the foundation of the IEP and is used to specify appropriate goals, services, supports, accommodations, and placements for the student. The IEP team can begin the process of developing a high quality PLAAFP statement by holding a discussion that centers around four essential elements: student needs, effect on progress in general education, baseline information, and connection to goals and/or services

what is IDEA

IDEA if the individuals with disabilities education act. It is a federal legislation that is the result of a need to recognize that some people need additional supports to access the general education system. It is important to an SLP because if these rules in the IDEA are not followed, you risk losing the entire grant for your employer.

IDEA is individuals with disabilities education act. It impacts SLP because we are experts at knowing what a student with disabilities may need to communication, so we need to be sure to provide these resources and advocate for these students to have access to the resources that they need. We also have to educate teachers and parents on why these resources are necessary to the child’s educational success.

what does access to and participation in the general education classroom mean

This statement means just what it says, that all children should have access to and participation in the general education program. It is our purpose to provide additional services as needed to ensure that every child has access to and is able to participate in a general education curriculum. We want every student to be included in a general education classroom, socially and academically.

what is MARSE

MARSE stands for Michigan Administrative Rules for Special Education. MARSE is not a law but is rather used for guidance. It includes a full list of Michigan rules which are paired with any relevant regulations from IDEA. The MARSE outlines specific requirements regarding how special education is to be implemented in Michigan.

what is a section 504 plan

Section 504 is used when a student is found eligible and in need of accommodations. This plan will then list accommodations and supports that the school will provide in order for the student to have access to an education (like extra time on tests, note taking assistance, or other supports).
