what is motivation?
the drive to learn and be successful
what are the 2 types of motivation?
intrinsic
extrinsic
what is intrinsic motivation and sporting example?
Inner drive to participate and be successful
This is the desire to take part for fun, enjoyment, pride and satisfaction
e.g. wanting to complete a marathon for fun, wanting to master/learn a tumble turn in swimming to try and get a faster personal best, wanting to practice shooting to improve accuracy
what is extrinsic motivation and a sporting example?
External drive to participate
The drive to perform or be successful for reasons such as rewards, medals, status, praise or recognition from significant others
e.g. wanting to win rewards such as medals at the Olympics, wanting to practice shooting so that you win the league, wanting to win at Wimbledon for prize money
what are some positives of intrinsic motivation?
Intrinsic rewards may be more 'valuable' with the individual taking part for their own gain
Intrinsic motivation may encourage lifelong participation
More self sufficient
Less pressure placed on outcome
what are some negatives of intrinsic motivation?
Intrinsic motivators may not be enough to maintain the motivation to participate
A cognitive learner may find it more difficult and not that enjoyable so may require more than just intrinsic motivation
what are some positives of extrinsic motivation?
Extrinsic rewards have more of a significant impact
May improve confidence
Extrinsic rewards such as badges may be an effective way to get children to learn a sport
what are some negatives of extrinsic motivation?
If extrinsic rewards are removed, motivation may decline - reliant
May not lead to long term participation
Increases pressure which may lead to cheating e.g. drugs
Sport may lose its fun
