Cell body (Soma)
the cell's life support center

Nissl bodies
RER in neurons -- synthesize enzymes (e.g., ChAT) and peptide neurotransmitters.

Dendrites
a neuron's bushy, branching extensions that receive messages and conduct impulses toward the cell body

Axon
the neuron extension that passes messages through its branches to other neurons or to muscles or glands

Axon terminal
The endpoint of a neuron where neurotransmitters are stored

Axon hillock
the cone-shaped area on the cell body from which the axon originates

Nucleus
A part of the cell containing DNA and RNA and responsible for growth and reproduction

Scwann cells
neuroglia that make up the myelin sheath in the PNS

Nodes of Ranvier
Gaps in the myelin sheath to which voltage-gated sodium channels are confined.

Endoneurium
loose connective tissue that encloses axons and their myelin sheaths
