How to convert degrees to radians?

Divide by 360 and multiply by 2pi

2
New cards

What is meant by the period of an object in circular motion?

The time taken for one full rotation

3
New cards

What is meant by angular velocity?

The angle travelled through divided by the time taken. Rate of rotation.

4
New cards

What kind of force is required to keep an object moving in a circle at a constant speed?

A constant centripetal force (a force always applied to the centre of the circle)

5
New cards

True or false: The centripetal force and velocity of an object moving in a circle are always in the same direction

False. Velocity is always at a tangent to the circle, force is always along a radius. Perpendicular

6
New cards

How are linear and angular velocity related?

V = wr

V = linear velocity, w = agular velocity, and r = radius

7
New cards

An object moving in a circle at a constant speed is not accelerating. True or false?

False.

Direction always changing hence velocity is always changing s its accelerating.

8
New cards

What is acceleration in terms of linear velocity?

a = V²/r

9
New cards

What are the equations for centripetal force?

F=mv²/r or F=mw²r

Describe how one can investigate circular motion?

Ty a bung with mass (m) to a piece of string and threading it through a glass tube.

Other end of string has a weight with Mass (M) suspended from it. This provides centripetal force F=mg, as the tension throughout string is constant.

String is whirled in a circle and time take for one complete rotation is recored via stopwatch.

Mass (M) is altered and repeat experiment

Equate Mg and centripetal force, Mg=MV²/r

Measuring radius of circle and using time for one oscillation velocity can be determined when plotting V² against M, should produce a straight line graph.
