Flashcards covering definitions of basic chemistry and matter concepts, including solutions, pure and impure substances, elements, compounds, and chemical formula notation.
Solvent
A substance that dissolves another substance.
Solute
A substance that dissolves in a solvent.
Solution
A homogeneous mixture composed of two or more substances.
Atom
The basic unit of matter.
Molecule
A group of atoms bonded together.
Pure substance
A substance with a fixed composition (elements/compounds).
Impure substance
A physical blend of substances (mixture).
Coefficient
A large number in front; tells how many molecules.
Subscript
A small number behind; tells how many atoms.
Element
A pure substance made of only one type of atom and cannot be broken down.
Compound
A pure substance made of two or more different elements bonded together and chemically combined in a fixed ratio.
Mixture
A physical combination of two or more substances that keep their own properties.
