Noun Clause

A dependent clause that functions as a noun in a sentence.

Example: What she said surprised everyone.

Helping Verb

A verb that helps the main verb express tense, mood, or voice.

Example: She has been studying for hours.

Linking Verb

A verb that connects the subject to a word that describes it.

Example: The cake smells delicious.

Predicate Noun

A noun that follows a linking verb and renames or describes the subject.

Object of a Preposition

The noun or pronoun that follows a preposition in a prepositional phrase.

Example: The cat jumped onto the table.

Tone

The author's attitude toward the subject or audience, conveyed through word choice.

Mood

The overall feeling or atmosphere created in a piece of writing.

Direct Object

A noun or pronoun that receives the action of a transitive verb.

1. Example: She threw the ball.

Indirect Object

A noun or pronoun that indicates to whom or for whom the action of the verb is done.

He gave his sister a gift.
