political engagemt that occur outside the formal institutions Protests, social movements, grassroot organizations → ESSENTIAL to delibrative democracies → gives us political agency
What is institutionalized political participation?
formal and structured ways that people engage in politics EX. Political parties, voting — Regular and organised, rules, embedding in the political framework
What is an Authoritarian Regime?
power is centralised, legiticmancy rests on the head of the state, maintain legitimacy by a monopoly of force
Issue with institutionalized political participation
Political particiation can still produce inequality, Max Weber’s Iron Cage → increased beautreacrization traps people in structers/rules that contain behaviour and secure power splits that favour elites
Solution → non institutionalized political participation
Contentious politics
when people join forces and confront the elites, enough incentives for us to mobilize around a cause
Social Movements
collective challenges based on common purposes and social solidarities, continuous interactions w/ elites/opponents/authorities
Social movements come before contentious poltics
Create political actors while contentious politics assumes they already exist
Centred around developing identity and political agency
Hallmark of social movements build the political actor → then go on to engage in contentious politics
