Be alert at intersections by...
- Looking for pedestrians, cyclists, other vehicles, yield signs, stop signs, and traffic lights
- Scanning sidewalks, path/trails, roadways
- Being mindful of children and bikes
2 types of intersections
- Controlled
- Uncontrolled
Controlled Intersections
- Traffic lights, yield signs, or stop signs to control traffic
- Drive through when green, prepare to stop when yellow (go through if already close), stop when red
- If blocked by traffic, stop, wait, and drive through only when traffic is clear
- Yield sign: slow down/stop, drive when clear
- Stop sign: stop entirely, drive only when clear
Uncontrolled Intersections
- No signs, no traffic lights
- Rule for which driver goes first is called yielding the-right-of-way
Yielding right-of-way
- When two drivers come to an uncontrolled intersection from different roads at the same time
- Generally, driver on left must yield to driver on right, but specifics vary (who approaches from where, if stop or yield signs present, etc.)
- Yielding must also happen for approaching traffic when turning (both from regular roads and private ones + driveways) and pedestrians
