Organisms
Group of organ systems working together to perform many functions. Ex: Shark, Bear, Plant

Organ System
Group of organs that work together to perform a specific function. Example: Skeletal System, Respiratory System, Digestive System

Organ
Group of tissues that work together to perform a specific function. Example: Heart, Liver, Lungs, Pancreas

Tissue
Group of cells of a similar type that work together to perform a specific function. Example: Muscle Fibers

Cell
Smallest unit of life. This can have various organelles, shapes, and sizes to perform a specific task. Example: Nerve, Muscle, Epithelial.

Prokaryote
Unicellular organism that does not have a nucleus or membrane bound organelles. Smaller and less complex cell that contains a nucleoid for genetic information. Example: Bacteria

Eukaryote
Unicellular or Multicellular organism that has a nucleus and membrane bound organelles. Larger and more complex cell that has genetic information is stored in the nucleus. Cell can take on specific jobs. Example: Plant and Animal Cells.

Robert Hooke
First to observe cells by looking at cork. Also the first person to use the term "cell".

Microscope
An optical instrument with many lenses that magnifies and views smaller specimens.

Cell Theory
An theory that states that:
-Cells are the basic unit of life
-All living things are made of one or more cells
-All cells come from preexisting cells

Homeostasis
Maintaining a stable balance between external and internal conditions in cells or the body

Sexual Reproduction
A type of reproduction that involves two parents who combine genetic material to create offspring that are unique from both parents

Asexual Reproduction
A type of reproduction that involves one parent and results in offspring that is genetically identical to the parent

Multicellular
Organism made of more than one cell, normally larger and more complex with a specific function. Example: Animal or Plant Cells, Muscle Cells

Metabolism
The combination of all chemical reactions in an organism, normally breaking down materials into usable energy

Unicellular
Organism is made of only one cell, normally smaller and more simplistic. Example: Bacteria, Amoeba, Paramecium

Stimuli
An internal or environmental change that causes a reaction by an organism. Example: Light, Temperature, Water, Salt, Aggression
