Intergenerational equity
Ensuring that health, diversity and productivity of the environment are maintained or enhanced for the benefit of future generations.
Intragenerational equity
Ensuring fair and equaitable access to environmental resources and benefits within the present generation.
Precautionary principle
Where there is a threat of serious or irreversible environmental damage, lack of full scientific certainty must not be used as a reason for postponing measures to prevent environmental degradation, and the burden of proof lies with the proponent of the activity.
User pays principle
Those who use or benefit from the environmental resources or services should bear the full environmental and economic costs associated with their use.
