Cornea
outer dome covering the eye
Why does the cornea get oxygen from the air?
It has no blood vessels
What does the cornea trigger?
The blink reflex
Iris
The area with color where muscles contract/enlarge to change how much light enters the pupil
Pupil
the hole in the center of the iris that lets light enter the eye
Lens
the part if the eye that focuses light before reaching the retina
Cones
detect color (RGB) and help see up to 7 million colors in bright light
Rods
Receptor cells that pick up black, white, and 500 shades of grey (they help extra in darker light)
Blind spot
the location where blood vessels and the optic nerve exit the eye; contains no photoreceptors
Optic nerve
What signals travel down to go from the eye to the brain (connects retina to brain)
Visual Cortex
The area of the brain that flips the upside-down image
Fovea
Central area of the retina that is responsible for sharp central vision
Ganglion cells
neurons in retina that receive visual info from bipolar cells and transmit to the brain via the optic nerve
Accommodation
the process by which the lens of the eye changes shape to focus on objects at different distances
Trichromatic Theory
a theory proposing that color vision is based on 3 types of cone receptors (RGB)
Opponent Process Theory
A theory proposing that color vision is based on pairs of opposing color processes
What is the order of parts from the outside of the eye to the brain?
Cornea, Pupil/Iris, Lens, Retina, Optic Nerve, Brain (visual cortex)
Transduction
Energy changing from one form to another
Where does transduction happen in the eye?
Retina
Where does transduction happen in the ear?
cochlea
What makes up the outer ear?
Pinna, ear canal, eardrum
What makes up the middle ear?
3 tiny bones that amplify and pass vibrations along(Hammer, anvil, stirrup)
What makes up the inner ear?
Cochlea, semicircular ear canals, and auditory nerve
Conduction Deafness
Hearing impairment caused by problems to the outer/middle ear
Sensorineural Deafness
Hearing loss caused in inner ear/auditory nerve
