Taxonomy
Taxonomy is science of classifying living things.
Two main purposes: Help identify organisms/represent relationships between organisms
What are the levels of Taxonomy?
Domain, Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species
What are the 3 Species Concepts?
Morphological: look at the body shape/size/features
Biological: two organisms can produce fertile off-spring
Phylogenetic: look at the evalutionary history of organisms
What is Binomial nomenclature?
Used for naming organisms by two names referred to as the “Scientific Name”
What is Genus + Species?
Genus - first part of the name (Upper case)
Species - second part of the name (lower case)
Examples: Ursus horribilis — grizzily bear
The Domains of Life
Bacteria
Archaea
Eukarya
These domains are separated generally by their cell type.
Diversity of Life
Scientists estimate there are over 2 billion specis on earth.
What are the Six Kingdoms?

Explain Kingdom Archaea
Prokaryotic
Asexual reproduction
Oil wells
Acidic mine drainage
very salty conditions
Explain Kingdom Bacteria
Prokaryotic
Unicellular '
Heterotrophs / Autotrophs
Asexual reproduction
Explain Kingdom Protista
Eukaryotic
Unicellular / Multicellular
Heterotrophs / Autotrophs
Asexual / Sexual reproduction
Plant like / Animal like / Fungi like
Major Cell Types
Prokaryotes
“before the nucleus”
simple single cell
during reproduction, DNA comes in rings called plasmids
no complex organelles
Eukaryotes
“True nucleus”
