What is the difference between ionic and molecular compounds?
Ionic compounds have a metal (cation) and a non-metal (anion) where the cation loses ions to the anion, making the cation positive and the anion negative.
Molecular compounds have two non-metals that share electrons.
What is a diatomic molecule?
A particle made of exactly two atoms bonded together (same or different atoms)
What group is ALKALI METALS?
Group 1
What group is ALKALINE EARTH METALS?
Group 2
What group is HALOGENS?
Group 7
Which elements are metalloids?
Boron, Silicon, Germanium, Arsenic, Antimony, Tellurium
How does acid react to litmus?
It turns litmus paper red
How do bases react to litmus?
It turns litmus paper blue
Is an ion formed from an acid dissolved in water?
Yes, acids release hydrogen (H+) cations in water.
Is an ion formed when a base is dissolved in water?
Yes, they release hydroxide anions (OH-) in water.
How do bases react to phenolphthalein?
Bases turn phenolphthalein pink.
How do acids react to phenolphthalein?
It doesn’t change colour.
How do acids react to bromothymol blue?
Acids turn it yellow
How do bases react to bromothymol blue?
Bases turn it blue.
How does an acid react to baking soda?
Goes through neutralization (acid + base (baking soda))
How does a base react to baking soda?
No chemical reaction (base + base (baking soda))
Are acids conductive?
Yes, but only in their aqueous state.
Are bases conductive?
Yes, but only in their aqueous state.
What are five signs of a chemical change?
Unexpected colour change
Precipitate (solid) formed in liquid
Bubbles or gas formed
Produces or absorbs light
Difficult to reverse (not 100%)
Define synthesis
substances react to yield a product by combining.
Define decomposition
a molecule breaks down into simpler substances
Define single displacement
a single substance replaces a substance in a compound
define double displacement
two ionic compounds exchange their ions with each other
define neutralization
an acid and a base react to create a substance with a pH lev3el closer to 7, and often yield water and a salt.
