Where is the appendix located anatomically?
Located at the terminal end of the caecum where three taeniae coli join, approximately 2cm below the ileocaecal orifice.
What are the typical dimensions of the appendix?
Typically 9-10cm in length, with an external diameter of 5-6mm and a lumen diameter of 1-3mm.
What is the blood supply of the appendix?
Supplied by the appendicular artery (a branch of the ileocolic artery) located in the mesoappendix, and occasionally an accessory appendicular artery of Seshachalam.
What is Wallbridge Classification - Type A?
Partial duplication of the appendix in a single caecum.
What is Wallbridge Classification - Type B?
Two separate appendices in a single caecum.
What is Wallbridge Classification - Type C?
Double caecum, with each caecum possessing one appendix.
What are the most common positions of the appendix?
Retrocaecal (75%) is most common, followed by pelvic (21%). Other positions include subcaecal, paracaecal, preileal, and postileal.
