Adenosine triphosphate (ATP)
A molecule which acts as a universal energy currency for living cells.
ATP structure
A molecular configuration consisting of the nucleoside adenosine and a tail of 3 phosphate groups.
ATP synthesis
The process by which energy is safely stored as chemical energy in the high energy phosphate bonds via reactions or by ATP synthase.
Phosphate group charges
The negative charges in the phosphate groups that repel each other and require high amounts of energy to bond them together.
ATP hydrolysis
The process by which energy is released when high-energy phosphate bonds are broken.
