1/23
Vocabulary flashcards covering core competency areas, regulatory terms, agronomic metrics, and management practices for the Wisconsin Certified Crop Adviser performance objectives.
Major Wisconsin Crops
The group of ten primary crops grown on at least 20,000 acres in Wisconsin: alfalfa, corn, pea, red clover, soybean, oat, potato, snap bean, sweet corn, and winter wheat.
Pesticide Applicator Training (PAT)
The Wisconsin education and certification program administered through the WDATCP required for applicators to obtain licensing for pesticide application.
Maximum Return to Nitrogen (MRTN)
The regional approach used as the foundational basis for Wisconsin nitrogen rate application guidelines for corn and wheat.
4R Nitrogen Management
A nutrient stewardship framework addressing agronomic, economic, and environmental concerns through the right rate, right source, right timing, and right placement of nitrogen.
Nitrogen Mineralization
The biological process in the nitrogen cycle where soil microorganisms convert organic nitrogen from soil organic matter, manure, or residues into plant-available inorganic forms.
Nitrification
The biological oxidation process in the soil nitrogen cycle where ammonium is converted to nitrite and subsequently to nitrate.
Denitrification
The microbial conversion of nitrate into gaseous nitrogen forms, leading to nitrogen loss under anaerobic or waterlogged conditions.
Nitrogen Immobilization
The uptake and conversion of plant-available inorganic nitrogen into organic forms by soil microbes decomposing residues with a high C:N ratio.
Sul-Po-Mag
A potassium fertilizer material with an analysis of 0-0-22 that also supplies magnesium and sulfur.
Pre-Sidedress Nitrate Test (PSNT)
An in-season diagnostic soil nitrate test taken prior to sidedressing corn to assess available soil nitrate-nitrogen and adjust fertilizer rates.
USDA NRCS 590 Technical Standard
The conservation practice technical standard outlining minimum criteria and specific protections for groundwater and surface water used in nutrient management planning.
Soil Bulk Density
The mass of dry soil divided by its unit total volume, directly inversely related to soil porosity and affected by soil texture and compaction.
RUSLE2
The Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation 2, used to predict rill and inter-rill water erosion based on rainfall intensity (R), soil erosivity (K), slope length (L), slope steepness (S), cropping management (C), and conservation practices (P).
Soil Conditioning Index (SCI)
A metric used in conservation planning to assess whether a cropping system and management practices will maintain, decline, or improve soil organic matter levels.
Line-Transect Method
A field measurement procedure used to estimate the percentage of surface crop residue cover remaining on a field.
Preferential Flow
The rapid downward movement of water and dissolved solutes through macropores, fractures, and karst features, bypassing the general soil matrix.
Wisconsin P Index
An assessment metric that estimates the risk of phosphorus delivery from an agricultural field to surface water to guide field-specific manure and fertilizer allocation.
Surface Water Quality Management Area (SWQMA)
A defined conservation boundary adjacent to surface water features that carries specific nutrient application restrictions to mitigate runoff and water pollution.
Economic Injury Level (EIL)
The lowest pest population density that will cause economic damage equal to or exceeding the cost of pest control tactics.
Economic Threshold (ET)
The pest population density at which management tactics must be taken to prevent an increasing pest population from reaching the economic injury level.

Colorado Potato Beetle
A major striped chewing insect pest of potato crops in Wisconsin capable of severe foliar feeding injury.
Insecticide Resistance Action Committee (IRAC) Codes
A standardized numbering system identifying insecticide and miticide modes of action to aid in designing rotation programs that delay pest resistance.
Restricted-Entry Interval (REI)
The period following a pesticide application during which agricultural workers are prohibited from entering a treated field without specialized protective equipment under the Worker Protection Standard.
Growing Degree-Days (GDD)
A heat unit index calculated from daily temperatures used to track and predict physiological growth and developmental staging in corn and other crops.
