Cranial Nerves
Nerves that serve and arise from the brainstem, crucial for speech and hearing.
General Somatic Afferent (GSA)
Cranial nerves that convey pain, temperature, and mechanical stimulation of skin, muscle, or joints.
Special Somatic Afferent (SSA)
Cranial nerves involved in special body senses such as vision and hearing.
General Visceral Afferent (GVA)
Cranial nerves that transmit sensations within the viscera (e.g., abdominal organs, glands).
Special Visceral Afferent (SVA)
Cranial nerves responsible for special visceral senses of taste and smell.
General Visceral Efferent (GVE)
Cranial nerves that provide autonomic efferent innervation to viscera and glands.
General Somatic Efferent (GSE)
Cranial nerves that innervate skeletal muscle.
Special Visceral Efferent (SVE)
Cranial nerves that innervate striated muscles derived from branchial arches.
I Olfactory Nerve
SVA nerve that mediates the sense of smell without going through the thalamus.
II Optic Nerve
Nerve associated with vision; transmits visual information from the retina to the brain.
III Oculomotor Nerve
Nerve responsible for motor innervation of eye movement muscles except for abduction.
IV Trochlear Nerve
Nerve that turns the eye down and in.
VI Abducens Nerve
Nerve that abducts the eyeball, moving it laterally.
V Trigeminal Nerve
Critical nerve for speech; has three branches providing sensory and motor innervation to the face.
VII Facial Nerve
Nerve responsible for facial muscle movement and taste sensation from the anterior 2/3 of the tongue.
VIII Vestibulocochlear Nerve
Conveys auditory information and balance sensations to the brain.
IX Glossopharyngeal Nerve
Nerve important for swallowing; mediates taste from the posterior 1/3 of the tongue.
X Vagus Nerve
Nerve that mediates taste from the epiglottis and laryngeal area; involved in autonomic regulation.
XI Accessory Nerve
Motor nerve providing innervation to the sternocleidomastoid and trapezius muscles.
XII Hypoglossal Nerve
Nerve that provides motor innervation to all tongue muscles except the palatoglossus.
somatic
skin, muscles, bones, joints, and connective tissues
viceral
internal organs (heart, lungs, intestines bladder)
