five psychosexual stages
oral (mouth) → anal (bowel/bladder control) → phallic (genitals/rivalry) → latency (dormant) → genital (mature sexuality)
displacement vs. projection
displacement: taking out feelings on safer target (e.g., yelling at partner because mad at boss)
projection: accusing someone else of having own unacceptable feelings (e.g., accusing partner of cheating because you’re thinking of cheating)
reaction formation
expressing the opposite of your true feelings
regression
reverting to early developmental behaviors as a coping mechanism (e.g., crying on parent’s shoulder after breakup)
sublimation
redirecting into social good instead of acting out on negative urges (e.g., starting an anti-bullying advocacy group after experiencing bullying instead of taking out revenge years later)
conversion
physiological distress, with no medical cause, deriving from psychological distress (e.g., excruciating back pain during stressful finals season)
identification
absorbing another’s mannerisms (oftentimes, someone successful or powerful as an ego defense mechanism)
intellectualization
turning an emotional event into a case study with cold, objective facts to suppress feelings
persona, jungian archetype
the "mask” you wear to fit in to whatever context and hide what’s unacceptable (e.g., your professional work personality vs. your at home personality)
shadow, jungian archetype
the darker parts of us that we don’t want to admit we have
anima/animus, jungian archetype
the “opposite gender” qualities of one
self, jungian archetype
the whole of conscious + unconscious mind we work towards in self-actualization
