Botany
The scientific study of plants; also called plant biology, encompassing the origin, diversity, structure, and internal processes of plants.
Cocos nucifera
The scientific name for the coconut palm tree, often referred to as the "Tree of Life" because it produces fruits (the largest seed in the world) and provides materials for oil, food, shelter, and utensils.
Plant Molecular Biology
The study of the structures and functions of important biological molecules such as proteins and nucleic acids in plants.
Plant Biochemistry
The study of the chemical interactions within plants, including the variety of chemicals that plants produce.
Plant Cell Biology
The subdiscipline that encompasses the structures, functions, and life processes of plant cells.
Plant Anatomy
The study of microscopic plant structures, specifically cells and tissues.
Plant Morphology
The study of the structures of plant parts such as leaves, roots, and stems, including their evolution and development.
Plant Physiology
The study of processes such as photosynthesis and mineral nutrition to understand how plants function.
Plant Genetics
A specialty focusing on plant heredity and variation.
Plant Ecology
The study of the interrelationships among plants and between plants and their environment.
Plant Systematics
The discipline encompassing the evolutionary relationships among different plant groups.
Plant Taxonomy
A subdiscipline of systematics that deals with the description, naming, and classification of plants.
Paleobotany
The study of the biology and evolution of plants in the geologic past.
Bryology
The study of mosses and similar plants.
Agronomy
The study of field crops and soils.
Horticulture
The study of ornamental plants and fruit and vegetable crops.
Forestry
Focuses on forest conservation and forest products such as lumber.
Economic Botany
The study of plants with commercial importance.
Atom
The smallest particle of an element that possesses the properties of that element.
Molecules
Forms when atoms combine chemically by forming bonds.
Macromolecules
Large biological molecules such as proteins and nucleic acids.
Organelles
Internal structures within cells responsible for functions like energy production and protein synthesis.
Tissues
Associations of cells that perform specific functions.
Organs
Functional units that perform specific roles, composed of organized tissues.
Population
Groups of members of the same species that live together in the same area at the same time.
Community
Consists of all the populations of different organisms that live and interact within an area.
Ecosystem
A community together with its nonliving environment.
Biosphere
The collective term for all of Earth’s ecosystems.
Photosynthesis
The biological process that includes the capture of light energy and its transformation into chemical energy of organic molecules manufactured from CO2 and H2O.
Cellular Respiration
The process where food molecules like glucose are broken down, usually in the presence of oxygen, to release chemical energy.
Stimuli
Changes in the environment to which plants and other organisms respond, such as light, temperature, or touch.
Asexual Reproduction
Reproduction that does not involve the union of gametes; one parent gives rise to offspring virtually identical to itself.
Sexual Reproduction
Reproduction involving the union of gametes (egg and sperm) to form a zygote, resulting in offspring with a unique combination of traits.
Genes
The units of hereditary information composed of DNA.
Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA)
The nucleic acid present in a cell’s chromosomes that contains genetic information.
Adaptations
Characteristics that enable an organism to better survive in a certain environment, involving changes in structure, form, or function.
Evolution
The genetic change in a population of organisms from generation to generation and the process by which organisms adapt to their environment over time.
Natural Selection
The mechanism of evolution proposed by Charles Darwin; the tendency of organisms with favorable adaptations to survive and become parents of the next generation.
Prokaryotes
Organisms that lack nuclei and other membrane-bounded organelles.
Eukaryotes
Organisms whose cells have a nucleus and other organelles enclosed by a plasma membrane.
Domain
A taxonomic category above the kingdom level, based on fundamental biochemical differences; the three domains are Bacteria, Archaea, and Eukarya.
Kingdom
A broad taxonomic category made up of related phyla; currently, biologists recognize six: Archaea, Bacteria, Protista, Fungi, Plantae, and Animalia.
Cuticle
A waxy covering over the outer parts of a plant that reduces water loss.
Stomata
Tiny openings in leaves and stems used for gas exchange.
Species
A group of similar organisms with similar structural and functional characteristics that interbreed only with one another in nature.
Binomial System of Nomenclature
A naming system simplified by Carolus Linnaeus where each species receives a two-part name consisting of a genus and a specific epithet.
Specific Epithet
The second word in a scientific name that designates a specific species within a genus.
Scientific Method
The process of objectively establishing facts through observation, forming a hypothesis, making predictions, conducting experiments, and analyzing results.
Hypothesis
An educated guess based on previous observations that is testable and can possibly be disproved.
Control Group
A group in an experiment that remains unchanged or exposed to normal conditions to serve as a baseline for comparison.
Experimental Group
The group in an experiment exposed to the specific variable or intervention being studied.
Inductive Reasoning
The discovery of general concepts by the careful examination of specific cases; it moves from specific observations to a probable general conclusion.
Deductive Reasoning
Reasoning that proceeds from generalities to reach specific, logical conclusions; it aims to guarantee truth if the premises are true.
Theory
A widely accepted, integrated explanation of numerous hypotheses supported by a large body of observations and experiments.
