Nerve Cells
Neurons are specialized cells that carry electrical impulses
They have three parts
Dendrites: receive incoming impulses
Cell Body: makes new impulses
Axon: carries new impulse away toward next cell
Glial Cells
Cells that protect or support the neurons
They do NOT carry impulses
Schwann cells are the most common. They insulate axons to speed up impulses
Gray and White Matter
Gray matter is actual neurons/synapses
White matter is axons covered with Schwann cells
Synapses
Junctions where one neuron communicates chemically with another
Nerve Tissue
Nerve tissue is very delicate due to lack of protein (no collagen) so it is easily damaged
Most nerve tissue is protected by bone or muscle
Nerve tissue is specialized so it does not regenerate
