Safety Goggles
Protects eyes from chemical exposure and must ALWAYS be worn while working in the lab.

Beaker
Glassware that holds solids or liquids that will not release gases when reacted or are unlikely to splatter if stirred or heated.

Erlenmeyer Flask
Flask that holds solids or liquids that may release gases during a reaction or that are likely to splatter if stirred or heated.

Graduated Cylinder
Equipment used to measure volumes of liquids.

Test Tubes
Glass containers used in the lab, including Ignition tubes, 13×100 mm test tubes, and 10×75 mm test tubes.

Test Tube Holder/Clamp
A tool useful for holding a test tube which is too hot to handle.

Test Tube Brushes
Brushes used for cleaning test tubes; forcing a large brush into a small test tube will often break the tube.

Test Tube Racks
Racks used for holding and organizing test tubes on the laboratory bench; plastic racks may melt in contact with very hot test tubes.

Rubber Stoppers
Stoppers used to close containers to avoid spillage or contamination; containers should never be heated when there is a stopper in place.

Spot Plate or Microtray
A tray used when performing many small scale reactions at one time.

Watch Glass
A concave glass piece used to hold a small amount of solid, such as the product of a reaction.

Glass Stirring Rod
A glass rod used to manually stir solutions or transfer a single drop of a solution.

Medicine Dropper
A glass dropper with a rubber bulb on top used to transfer a small volume of liquid (less than 1 mL).

Forceps
Tools (or tweezers) used to pick up small objects.

Funnel
Equipment used to aid in the transfer of liquid from one vessel to another.

Filter Paper
Paper used to separate a mixture, which is folded into a cone shape to fit into a funnel.

Scoopulas & Spatulas
Tools used to dispense solid chemicals from their containers, preventing the transfer of chemicals with bare hands.

Beaker Tongs
Tongs used to move beakers containing hot liquids.

Bunsen Burner
A burner used for the heating of nonvolatile liquids and solids.

Strikers
Tools used to light Bunsen burners; contain expensive flints that should not be operated repeatedly just to see sparks.

Evaporating Dish
A dish used for the heating of stable solid compounds and elements.

Retort Stand
A stand used to set up reactions that require heating using a Bunsen burner.

Iron Rings
Rings that connect to a retort stand and provide a stable, elevated platform for a reaction.

Crucible
A container used for heating certain solids, particularly metals, to very high temperatures.

Clay Triangle
A triangular frame used as a support for porcelain crucibles when being heated over a Bunsen burner.

Crucible Tongs
Tongs used for handling hot crucibles and picking up other hot objects; MUST NOT be used for picking up beakers.

Thermometer
An instrument used to measure temperature.

Wire Gauze
A wire mesh that sits on the iron ring to provide a place to stand a beaker.
