Shelby's lines from John Proctor is the villain
Beth: No it’s great, I love it I want to write about it I, you’re the best teacher I’ve ever had.
*A half knock on the door
It’s Shelby*
Shelby: Hey… Sorry. Beth? I was just in the library? Are you still good/to—?
Beth: Oh no I’m so sorry I completely forgot!!!
Shelby: No that’s fine! We can do it another time/or something..?
Beth: I mean I’ve been having kind of a tough time with Ivy’s dad and everything? Sorry to/like—
Shelby: Yeah. No. Totally.
Beth: We were just talking about “Green Light”
Shelby: You mean the best song of all time?
Beth: Yeah like in conversation with The Great Gatsby!
Shelby: Naturally.
Beth: Wait oh my god do you remember the day it came out?
Shelby: Oh my god at your house?
Beth: Mr. Smith, last year when it came out we sat on my floor and played this song on repeat for literally like two hours straight just setting and listening
Shelby: Listening.
Beth: And then we had a dance party that got so intense Raelynn cried and Ivy almost threw up.
Shelby: Laughs
I forgot about that!
Beth: (a performative look toward an invisible horizon)
“Was anyone ever so young?”
Shelby: (smokes a fake cigarette)
“I am here to tell you that someone was.”
Beth: It’s just like a thing we do.. Sorry.
Shelby: It our little bit. It’s weird. We’re weird.
Beth: Shelby actually introduced me to her.
Shelby: Yeah. Beth isn’t the only one who reads. I think Walt Whitman probably said it best: I contain frickin’ multitudes.
