Interviewer
INTERVIEWEE What is this…?
Hello. Please, don’t be afraid.
INTERVIEWEE I’m not afraid. Who are you?
I understand this must be very confusing for you. Everyopne who passes through this space needs a bit of time to adjust. Please, take several deep breaths with me. In through the nose, out through your mouth…
INTERVIEWEE Jesus, lady, I know how to breathe. I’m not doing that. Tell me where I am.
Hello? Can I leave please?
I’m so glad you asked! Please, do have a seat. It makes my job easier—
INTERVIEWEE —I’d rather stand—
—and really your’re making me quite nervous—
—I’m not going to sit!—
—Oh my WORD! Would you PLEASE SIT DOWN?
INTERVIEWEE Okay. What now?
You want to leave, yes?
INTERVIEWEE Yeah, that’s. That’s the goal.
Excellent! I’m here to help you do just that.
INTERVIEWEE Jesus Christ.
Please, refain from using that kind of language in this space.
Yes, yes, okay. Leaving. There’s only one way, through the Door.
INTERVIEWEE Bullshit. I don’t know what this building is but I’m pretty damn sure I could just walk away.
We’re not indoors, strictly. We’re not anywhere—or rather, we’re in the Vestibule. Do you know what a vestibule is?
INTERVIEWEE No.
Vesibule. V-E-S-T-I-B-U-L-E. Vestibule. A passage. A place between. Arrive at it, leave it, but you can never remain. This Vestibule is as big as you can imagine it but infinitesimally small compared to the place you pass through it to get to.
INTERVIEWEE So I could walk away? Out into it—this—Vestibule?
No. It doesn’t work like that.
INTERVIEWEE So how does it work, then?
I’m so glad you asked! Please, look in the mirror.
Look all the way into it.
Tell me what you see.
INTERVIEWEE Myself
Elaborate.
INTERVIEWEE My…face. My makeup. Hair.
Your painted face, your ratty hair. Now look at me. Tell me what you see.
INTERVIEWEE Pretty face. Blonde hair. Curled. Like a doll.
This is the purpose of the Vesitibule. To pass through the Door, you must surrender the vestments of your past. They are shallow like youl; a remnant of your inadequacy. Gaudiness may have brought you through the previous life, but it will get you nowhere in this one.
INTERVIEWEE My vestments.
Yes.
INTERVIEWEE What… what do you mean?
All the things you put on to mask your own emptiness. You have to let go of them… I can prepare you to pass through the Door. I can help you can fix that empty space… I can make you like me.
INTERVIEWEE No.
What?
INTERVIEWEE No. I don’t want to.
That’s not— What do you mean, you don’t want to? Don’t you want leave?
INTERVIEWEE I don’t want to be like you. A whole bunch more. I don’t want that. I don’t need whatever’s behind that door that bad.
That is not nice to say, and besides, of course you need what ‘s behind the Door—
INTERVIEWEE NO! No, I don’t. Don’t tell me what I need. Why do you even stay here? What could you possiblly get you possible get out of doing this?
I-
INTERVIEWEE What do you care if I’m enough like you to pass beyond? Is it really that important to you?
I- I don’t know.
INTERVIEWEE I’m leaving. You said the Vestibule is as big as I can imagine it to be? I’m going to start walking and find somewhere else to be. We’re done here.
Come with me. You don’t have to stay here.
I can’t leave. I won’t leave.
