What is simple distillation used for?
Separating a dissolved solid from a liquid when you want to collect the liquid.
Describe the method of simple distillation.
1. Heat the solution in a flask until it boils. 2. The liquid evaporates into a vapour. 3. The vapour passes through a cold condenser and condenses back into a liquid. 4. Collect the liquid in a beaker. The solid remains in the flask.

What is the function of the condenser?
Cold water keeps the condenser cold, causing the vapour to condense into a liquid.Cold water keeps the condenser cold, causing the vapour to condense into a liquid.
Describe the apparatus used for simple distillation.
A flask containing the solution, a heat source, a thermometer, a condenser and a beaker to collect the liquid.
What are the two stages of simple distillation?
1. Evaporation. 2. Condensation.
How can simple distillation produce drinking water from seawater?
Heat seawater so the water evaporates, then condense and collect it. Dissolved salts remain in the flask.
Why isn't simple distillation generally used to produce drinking water?
It requires a great deal of energy.
