1/9
Vocabulary flashcards covering the anatomy of the pharynx, lower respiratory system zones, and the basic structure and functions of the larynx.
Palatine tonsils
Tonsils located in the lateral walls of the fauces.
Lingual tonsil
Tonsil located on the posterior surface of the tongue.
Laryngopharynx
A passageway for food and air located posterior to the upright epiglottis that extends to the larynx, where it is continuous with the esophagus, and is lined with stratified squamous epithelium.
Lower respiratory system
Anatomical division consisting of the larynx, trachea, bronchi, and lungs, which is categorized into the respiratory zone and the conducting zone.
Respiratory zone
The site of gas exchange consisting of microscopic structures such as respiratory bronchioles, alveolar ducts, and alveoli.
Conducting zone
Conduits that transport gas to and from gas exchange sites; includes all other respiratory structures and functions to cleanse, warm, and humidify air.
Larynx (voice box)
A structure extending from the 3rd to 6th cervical vertebra that attaches to the hyoid bone, opens into the laryngopharynx, and is continuous with the trachea.
Functions of the larynx
Three key functions: providing a patent airway, routing air and food into proper channels, and voice production (housing vocal folds).
Framework of the larynx
Structural framework consisting of nine hyaline cartilages (except for the epiglottis), connected by membranes and ligaments.
Thyroid cartilage
A large, shield-shaped cartilage that forms part of the framework of the larynx.
