Maslow's hierarchy of needs

What does the theory suggest?

It proposes that human actions are motivated by five levels of needs.

How does the theory link to business?

When these needs are met motivation and efficiency increased within the workplace.

Physiological

The needs that are vital to our survival. E.g. water, food, shelter

Security and safety

Includes things such as financial security, insurance and having savings which is good for an individual to have, but they can survive without it.

Love / belonging

The need for emotional connections drives human behaviour. E.g. friends, family, religious groups.

Esteem

The need for appreciation and respect. E.g. academic recognition, athletic teams, hobbies.

Self-actualisation

“They are people who have developed or are developing to the full stature of which they are capable”
