2
New cards

False

(True/False) The earth's rotation and revolution are equally noticeable to people on the earth.

3
New cards

True

(True/False) Polar regions receive only a small amount of sunlight in winter .

4
New cards

True

(True/False) Wind belts combine with the Coriolis effect to help explain the basic movement of thermal energy around the earth .

5
New cards

False

(True/False) Longitude plays a role in establishing climate .

6
New cards

False

(True/False) The earth rotates on its axis at 23 1/2 ° and turns 480° every twenty-four hours .

7
New cards

False

(True/False) A sudden rise in temperature causes water vapor to lose energy and fall to the earth as sleet or hail .

8
New cards

True

(True/False) Water from precipitation stays on the earth's surface for only a brief time .

9
New cards

False

(True/False) The coast of Chile is a tropical rainforest because the cold Peru Current flows nearby .

10
New cards

True

(True/False) The slowest ocean currents are called drifts .

11
New cards

Coriolis effect

The movement of warm and cold air masses combined with what explains the basic movement of thermal energy around the earth ?

12
New cards

rotation

The earth's movement on its axis every twenty - four hours is known as what ?

13
New cards

atmosphere

The envelope of gases that surrounds the earth and is held in place by the planet's gravity is called what ?

14
New cards

solar system

What is composed of the sun , planets , small solar system bodies , and other objects around the sun by the sun's gravity ?

15
New cards

biome

What is any large region where distinct populations of plants and animals are found living together called ?

16
New cards

air mass

What term is used for a large area of moving air that has a similar temperature throughout ?

17
New cards

rain shadow

What term is used for the area on the side of mountains where little rain falls because little water vapor survives crossing over the mountains ?

18
New cards

summer

Which solstice occurs on June 21 in the Northern Hemisphere ?

19
New cards

hydrologic cycle

What is the process of evaporation , condensation , and precipitation called ?

20
New cards

dew point

The point at which water vapor begins condensation is called what ?

21
New cards

Coriolis effect

The effect of the earth's being " yanked " out from under the wind is called the . . .

22
New cards

trade winds

Hot prevailing winds that blow in the tropics are called the . . .

23
New cards

wetlands

Which of the following is not one of the three basic biomes ?

24
New cards

solstice

The point at which the sun reaches its greatest angular distance from the equator is called the . . .

25
New cards

equinox

The point at which the length of day and night are approximately equal all over the planet for an instant is known as the . . .

26
New cards

rotation

The most obvious motion of the earth is called . . .

27
New cards

tropics

The area between the equator and the Tropic of Cancer ( in the north ) and the Tropic of Capricorn ( in the south ) is called the . . .

28
New cards

Temperate, tropics, and polar

Name the latitude zones

29
New cards

the wind, atmospheric pressure, and humidity

What are the elements of weather

30
New cards

wind

This element of weather is the movement of air caused by the heating and cooling of air masses .

31
New cards

atmospheric pressure

The weight of gases in the atmosphere on surface area known as . . .

32
New cards

It is the process of evaporation, condensation, and precipitation

1.) Evaporation: liquid water changes to water vapor, rising into the atmosphere, forming clouds, and moving over land with the wind currents.

2.) Condensation: water vapor changes to liquid or solid water in the clouds.

3.) Precipitation: the liquid or solid water grows until it becomes too heavy to be supported by the air and then it falls to the earth as rain, sleet, hail, or snow and contributes to the supply of ground water. It flows to the streams and rivers which flow to the oceans. There the process begins again.

List and explain the steps in the hydrologic cycle .

33
New cards

-Weather is the meteorological conditions of a specific place at a specific point in time.

-Climate is the overall general type of weather of a place over a longer period of time such as a season, a year, or even a decade.

Explain the differences between weather and climate .
