What are characteristics of innate immunity?

Immediate/rapid

Non-specific

No classical long-term memory

First line of defense

What are characteristics of adaptive immunity

What are components of innate immunity

Phagocytosis

  • Neutrophils

  • Macrophages

  • Monocytes

  • Dendritic cells

Complement System

  • Activates a membrane attach complex

NK cells

  • Kill infected/abnormal cells

  • Kill virus-infected & cancer/tumour cells

  • Can kill these cells w/out needing prior exposure

Cytokines

  • Soluble signals that coordinate immunity
